Van Tyres
Van tyres are specially designed to provide additional strength and durability over standard car tyres.
Van tyres are usually reinforced with strengthened sidewalls so that they can transport heavier loads over long distances. They bear markings on the tyre sidewall including XL (extra load) and RF (reinforced) to inform the driver of their additional weight capabilities.
Van tyres can be fitted at most Kwik Fit centres with many also offering facilities for long wheelbase and high top vehicles for larger vans and commercial vehicles.

What load rating for van tyres?
Each and every tyre has been manufactured with a certain load capacity in mind. This load capacity will take into consideration the vehicle’s size. Van tyres have been designed in a way that considers the diverse terrain these vehicles will be negotiating and their heavy loads.
Individual to each tyre and vehicle, load rating values can be found as a marking on the sidewall of the tyre. However, it is not recommended to go by these as they indicate the maximum load capacity for the tyre. Alternatively, consult with the manufacturer’s guidelines in the vehicle handbook.
Every vehicle is different and the journeys they do on a daily basis will be varied too. For assistance regarding van load rating or anything else to do with your van tyres, contact Kwik Fit today. Why not take a look at our essential tyre guide for van owners?
How long should van tyres last?
A new set of tyres should return around 20,000 miles, with tailing tyres offering around double that figure. That said, the usable life of your tyres will depend wholly on their driving environment. Driving style, terrain, maintenance, and, of course, the load carried will all heavily impact the total mileage that your tyres return.
For ultimate longevity and up to 35 per cent more mileage compared to its Summer, Winter, or All-Season competitors, the Agilis CrossClimate is an excellent choice for van tyres.
There are various things you can do to ensure that you get the optimum mileage from your van tyres. This includes:
- regularly checking your tyres for any abrasions, bulges, or cuts
- avoid heavy acceleration, braking, or cornering
- ensure that your tyres remain inflated to the manufacturer’s specifications
- adjust tyre pressure appropriately to suit your required load
Do I need commercial tyres on my van?
The ultimate difference between commercial tyres and standard tyres is the total amount of weight they have been designed to carry. Commercial vehicles, such as vans, carry out a different job than passenger vehicles, transporting more people or heavier cargo, so the tyres are made in a way to support these requirements.
If you have a light commercial vehicle, it will need to be fitted with what are considered commercial tyres – those labelled with ‘C’ tyres. This style of tyre will be the most appropriate for vans travelling with heavy loads and for lengthy journeys.
Contact Kwik Fit today to help you pick the perfect ‘C’ tyre for your van or commercial vehicle. Similarly, use our innovative tyre selector where all you need is your vehicle registration to help find the right tyre.
Are van tyres different to car tyres?
If you’re in the market for a new set of van tyres for your vehicle, you’ll likely be interested in knowing what the difference is between van tyres and car tyres. The main differences between the two types of tyres hinge upon their reason for design — van tyres are built to be stronger and more durable, withstanding the activities that they are put through, such as transporting heavy loads and driving over rough terrain.
Van tyres have a specially developed and strengthened sidewall that allows for more pressure, ultimately offering more load capacity and catering to their constant everyday use carrying heavy cargo. You will be able to recognise commercial van tyres thanks to their ‘C’ label, which notes that they are designed specifically for vans. Car tyres which have been reinforced are labelled ‘RF’ or those adopted to transport heavier weights are labelled ‘XL’.
Car tyres and van tyres are not made to be interchanged. They are designed in a completely different way. The correct van tyre for your vehicle will depend wholly on the make and model of your vehicle as each van is different. For help choosing the right tyre for your van, contact Kwik Fit today, or take a look at our ‘types of tyre’ section. Van tyres should not be fitted to campervans and motorhomes. Specific tyres such as the Michelin Camping range have been specially developed for these vehicles.
Are you able to use van tyres on a car?
There is no denying that van tyres look the same as car tyres — leading motorists to mistakenly think that they are interchangeable. Within the tyres' makeup, however, there are vast differences, mainly relating to the sidewall.
Thanks to the fact that vans often have to transport significantly heavier cargo, more so than that of a car, their tyres are designed in such a way to support this. With this in mind, no, it is not appropriate to use van tyres on a car.
Commercial tyres are marked with a ‘C’ on their sidewall which helps you, the motorist, identify the fact that they have strengthened sidewalls, capable of transporting heavier loads.
What PSI should my van tyres be?
If you are looking to get the most mileage out of your tyres, limit the cost of your driving, reduce your emissions, and, similarly, maximise your grip, knowing what psi your van tyres should be is crucial!
Uneven wear of your tyres is caused by over-inflation whereas inefficient driving, over flexing, and potentially blow outs are all results of under inflation. Driving with underinflated tyres will use more fuel, cost more money, and ultimately increase your carbon footprint.
Meanwhile, inflate your tyres correctly to the manufacturer’s recommended specification and not only will all of these aforementioned issues be avoided, but your safety will also be significantly enhanced!
