The difference between a road car and a touring car

We’re two race weekends into the brilliant 2019 British Touring Car Championship and we’ve already seen plenty of twists and turns as top professional racing companies pit themselves against each other to claim the title in October.
The driver’s passion in BTCC is second to none, and we’re delighted to be the main title sponsors for this year’s campaign. To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with Toyota Corolla and driving sensation Tom Ingram to compare what goes into transforming a normal road car into a racing version. What are the big differences?
Everything from the technical aspects of a car, think engine, gearbox and brakes, to the interiors are meticulously considered when it comes to transforming a road car into a BTCC worthy winner. The car itself is completely stripped and reworked on the inside, removing all the stylish, comfortable mod cons you expect from a road car to make sure the racing version is as light as possible to make way for the bespoke steering wheel setup.
As expected, every difference has an impact on the top speed a BTCC car can go to make the race as competitive as possible, which is great for us spectators!
Take a look at the differences below in our handy infographic and video featuring Tom himself. Going to a BTCC event this season to see the action for yourself? Let us know which races you’ll be attending on Twitter by using the hashtag #KwikFitBTCC and mentioning us at @Kwik_Fit.
